After a long-awaited arrival, we finally got the chance to try out Feethams, Darlington’s newest foodie destination: NYC Bar & Grill. We eagerly headed down there on their opening day, and it’s safe to say that we were left extremely happy (and full) by the end of the day.

Surpassing the usual style of greasy American diners which have been dying out recently, NYC’s initial aim was to deliver fresh American food with modern twists, using bespoke and unique in-house recipes. Not only did we notice that the menu replicated this, but the interior and design of the restaurant itself screamed New York chic. I was particularly impressed with the outside dining area, but as a fairy-light fanatic, that was hardly surprising.

Our first port of call when we sat down was the cocktail menu. The selection of cocktails ranged from the classics, such as Long Islands and Cosmopolitans, to the completely unusual ones. We opted for a Nutella State, which was basically a boozy Nutella, cream and Baileys dessert in a glass (not complaining), and a Cotton Candy Prosecco. The Cotton Candy added even more sweetness to the Prosecco and was absolutely delicious.

We visited around midday, so we were given the option to order off the Express Lunch menu (main & dessert for £9.95), however, we were feeling a little hungrier than usual so opted for the main menu so we could get starters too. For food, we ordered the Mozzarella Fries, the Falafal & Spinach Burger with skin-on fries and an Original American Cheese burger also with skin-on fries. The Frickles (fried pickles with NYC relish) and the Nachos also sounded particularly good as starters, but as this was a lunch we thought it we should play it safe. As a vegetarian, I was slightly apprehensive about ordering a veggie burger from a predominantly meat-focused grill restaurant, however, I was very pleasantly surprised by the Spinach & Falafel burger, which was delicious. Other items on the menu which stood out were the Nutella or Peanut Butter Fries, Corn Dogs and the Doughnut Burger.

The main event for the meal was definitely dessert: Deep Fried Oreos. Imagine a doughnut stuffed with a soft Oreo and then dipped in Nutella. Serious foodie heaven – and this is coming from someone who usually lacks a sweet tooth. It’s easy to see why there has been so much hype around this dessert, I have found myself craving these babies ever since we left Feethams.

Considering how new the restaurant is, the service was fantastic. Our servers, Amy and Jay, were thoroughly attentive and offered us some helpful recommendations for cocktail and food choices. If you have the chance to pop by NYC, Darlington, I would wholly recommend doing so.

So will we be back for dinner at NYC? Absolutely - I’m already planning my next visit! As it is located conveniently opposite Vue, a post-movie meal and cocktails trip is definitely in order.
