Nominate your local hero in fantastic celebration of community spirit

Darlingtonians who have shown fantastic community spirit are set to be rewarded with a year’s worth of free latte, espresso and hot chocolate as the town’s newest hit venue launches a campaign to find ‘local heroes’.

Exciting independent coffee shop Mangobean, which opened at Feethams last year, already offers a discount to ‘those they think deserve it,’ such as NHS workers, students and public sector workers like fire and police service workers. Now, Mangobean is launching a campaign to find five local heroes – and reward them with free coffee for a year.

“We love being a part of this community and we very quickly gave out a whole bunch of our ‘superhero’ discount cards to local people that help make Darlington such a great place to live and work,” said franchisee Shuhel Ahmed. “Over the last few months we’ve really got to know some of the personalities in the area, and heard some of the amazing things they have done to help others.

“We wanted to let people know that community spirit is alive and kicking in Darlington,” he said, “and to do something to honour those people who do the extraordinary every day by making a difference to someone’s life. That’s why we’re launching our search for a local hero, inviting people to nominate anyone they think deserves some recognition.”

Mangobean is inviting nominations through the Feethams Facebook page, and a shortlist will then be compiled before people are encouraged to vote for who they think should win a year’s free coffee.

“Everyone’s idea of a hero is different, which is why we thought it would be great to give people a platform to publicly thank and acknowledge those who they admire and appreciate,” said Shuhel. “It could be a grandparent who helps look after children, or the friend who’s always there with a kind word or helping hand. Or it could be the lollipop lady who’s there to help you safely across the road each day, or the dad who always makes his children laugh,” he said.

“We love being a part of this community and thought this was a terrific way to recognise that the people of Darlington are one of a kind.”

Simon Hawkins, Development Director with Urban & Civic – the property development company behind the multi-million pound Feethams entertainment and leisure scheme – said he was delighted that Mangobean was proving such a hit with the wider community.

“As a local man myself I take great pride when our community spirit makes such a huge impression on people,” said Simon “Shuhel and his team are really popular with everyone, and their unconventional and fun approach to life is backed up with great tasting coffee. Giving away free drinks for a year to five local heroes is a fantastic way to thank the community for welcoming them – and is such a Mangobean thing to do!”

Nominations for Mangobean’s ‘local hero - free coffee for a year’ contest are now open on the Feethams Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/feethamsdarlington. A shortlist will then be compiled before voting begins next month.

Mangobean is open at Feethams Darlington from 7am to 9pm Monday through Saturday, and from 9am until 9pm on Sundays. For more information including details of special offers, visit http://www.feethamsdarlington.co.uk.
